Family Reports

Keeping your child’s best interest at the forefront when conducting a Family Report

What is a Family Report:

children_slogan photoA Family Report is a report that is organised during Family Law Proceedings. A Family Report provides information about each individual party involved in the proceedings, about the children involved and your family to assist the court to identify what is in the best interests of your children.
A Family Report can be commissioned through an Independent Children’s Lawyer (ICL), the Family Court or you can commission a Private Report yourself with or without a lawyer’s involvement. (William does not undertake private reports when the referral is by one party only, both parties need to consent to a Family Report).
There are many aspects that are assessed when compiling a Family Report and some of the issues that are taken into consideration are issues such as safety issues, drug and alcohol issues, domestic violence just to name a few.

William is an experienced independent Family Report Writer and practitioner. William is commissioned both privately and through Legal Aid preferred suppliers to write comprehensive Family Reports and Social Assessments for both the Family Court of Australia and the Children’s Court of Queensland.

The reports complied by William, whilst covering the requirements of the court and the legislation, are independent and comprehensive.

William is a child-focused report writer and at all times, the child’s best interests is paramount and at the forefront
during the report writing process.

A Family Report is designed to assist the court in determining such recommendations as:-
1. Parental roles and responsibilities;
2. How will the children involved will spend time and communicate with each parent;
3. Safety issues and risk assessment;
4. Communication tools for parents;
5. Post-separation support services and interventions that may assist children or adults such as attending parenting programs, counselling for example.

How is the information collected to compile a Family Report?

1. Once Northside Family and Counselling Services is commissioned to conduct a Family Report, you will be contacted by our office to organise interviews and assessments at a mutually convenient time for all parties concerned.
2. William will conduct in home interviews and assessments and speak with the adults/parents and children concerned in the Family Report. (Williams preferred method of compiling a Family Report is through the practice of home visits and interviews conducted at the residences that the child or children will reside in or have contact at. In the event that this is not possible, the interviews and assessments will be conducted at an office).
3. William will meet with the parties directly concerned with the Family Report, the children involved and where necessary, significant others.
4. William will conduct interviews and assessments when the child/children are in the care of respective parents, so as to minimise unnecessary stress to all parties concerned. In the event of court orders already in place, William will conduct interviews and observations as per the current court orders.
5. William will also attend contact arrangements at Contact Centres to conduct observations and assessments of contact occurring between the respective parent/s and child/children at the times indicated by the Contact Centres. (This includes weekend contact arrangements).

Information that may be collected at your interview:-

1. Family history;
2. Children’s history;
3. Your children’s individual needs;
4. All parties involved, their views, concerns and proposals;
5. Safety issues to the children or adults;
6. Your child’s views (A child will only be interviewed if they meet the requirements of an appropriate age to be interviewed, otherwise an observation only will occur).

How you can prepare for your interview and assessment for your Family Report:-

1. Inform your child/children that William will be attending your residence to work out what is in the best interests of them as to whom they spend time with.
2. The appointments take approximately two hours to conduct.
3. Think about what you feel is in the best interests of your child and why you think that is best for them.
4. Any information you feel is relevant to the Family Report please provide at your interview.
5. Consider any concerns or issues you wish to discuss and any proposals you would like to put forward.

What happens with the information collected:-

Once the information has been collected and interviews, assessments and observations are conducted, William will collate the information into a comprehensive Family Report and release the report to the appropriate parties concerned. The Family Report will be ready to be handed up to the
Family Court of Australia.

Our policy is to have all Family Reports released prior to the impending court dates (as indicated by the ICL), unless extenuating circumstances occur that prevent the Family Report from being released prior to Mention and Trial Dates (i.e. All necessary documentation and subpoenaed documentation has not been supplied to the Report Writer prior to court date).

At no times should the Family Report be given, shown or copied for anyone not associated with the report.

We accept Legal Aid funded rates to conduct Family Reports for Independent Children’s Lawyers (ICL). In the event of exceptional travel requirements however, i.e. flights, overnight stays or excessive travel to remote areas, this will be discussed with the ICL’s office upon the commissioning of the Family Report.

William travels between Tasmania to Cairns to conduct Family Reports at Legal Aid Funded Rates. Interviews and assessments are conducted in-home consisting of one visit per/party involved in the Family Report, and one visit to Contact Centres to conduct observations of contacts.
In the event that interviews cannot be conducted in-home, the interviews will take place in an office.
Please phone Kerry to discuss your requirements.
